labour day weekend – no labour involved

I took a nice long weekend thanks to the americans having a public holiday – if i haven’t mentioned this before, since the clients are american i get to take their public holidays instead of ours. It’s great. Shops are open and everyone else is at work. I got a lot done yesterday, including relicencing my car (R279 later – holy crap).

Also watched Bad Santa, which was hilarious and totally recommended, and Alexander, which was another Oliver Stone biopic. The thing with Oliver Stone biopics is that, while claiming to be about someone else, they are all in fact about Oliver Stone. Not even the great and glorious Angelina Jolie could save a movie that just went on and on and on. If Stone had cut out all the scenes that were just blatant directorial masturbation, and reduced the number of scenes in which Colin Farrel bursts into tears at a moment’s notice (and he does that a little too easily), and then cut out all the scenes with Anthony Hopkins (which were not necessary to the story at all, and were obviously just an excuse to have a big name in the movie) then what would have been left over would have been about 90 minutes of decent story. Throw in a gratuitous nude scene with Angelina and you have the makings of a great movie.

In the news, Mugabe is even more insane than ever, if that’s at all physically possible. The man is like a case study for psych students. Paranoia, check. Delusions, check. Shit flinging, check.

A big project openbox is working on went partially live last thursday. Check it out.

  1. Hey.

Had a look at the site.
The problem is flash. Well, actually flash isn’t the problem but the fact that there’s no option to skip the flash or go to a non-flash page *is*.

    So… what’s the site about?

  2. zomg! no flash installed? you troglodite.

In all seriousness, tho, that’s an oversight. The ‘skip this’ got written into the flash. i take no responsibility for it. bug logged. Can you get me a screenshot of what it looks like without flash?

    Nice one🙂

  3. i had the same problem🙂

  4. In Firefox 1.0.6 ppc/linux (for which there is no flash plugin).
    Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux ppc; en-US; rv:1.7.10) Gecko/20050828 Firefox/1.0.6

Also sent to your ananzi address (you still using it?).

Rest of the site looks good without flash:

  5. Firefox! You should have said right at the start🙂 we’re not contractually obliged to support non-IE users, although we are fixing non-IE bugs on a low priority scale. Interestingly, IE does not have any problem if you don’t have flash, it happily redirects you to the home page. Someone should email the Firefox ppl and tell them to handle lack of flash (especially if there’s no flash plugin!!!).

Thanks for the screenshots, btw, and the bug is logged but the priority has been dropped – we’ll get to it when we get to the other firefox and netscape bugs🙂

BTW, it’s a site for ticket sales and info about the new Observation Deck opening atop 30 Rockefeller Center on Nov 1. Buy your tickets now!

  6. Firefox! You should have said right at the start🙂
You mean ppl out there still use IE?😛

IE does not have any problem if you don’t have flash
I suspect in the same way it doesn’t have a problem with shit html and shit css…

Enough with the feather ruffling though – it seems not to like the javascript:ReDirect action or something.
OTOH, disabling Javascript presents a page with a simple link to the static site. Which is fine but that you then need to turn JavaScript back *on* for the front page to render after loading everything in the background.

Rather unbelievably, the flash page does actually have a link, but it’s in the flash movie!
How about adding the same simple <a href=”ODTStatic/site.htm”> at the bottom of the flash page?
Like, OMG, you mean hyperlinks work in ALL browsers?!!1😛

The rest of the site is works *perfectly* in ffox – you’ve outdone yourselves – I wouldn’t give that up for the lack of a simple link, tho.

  7. hey, like i said, it’s a bug, it will get fixed, but it’s not IE so we don’t contractually have to fix it so it’s about second from the bottom on the priority list at the moment🙂 we only fix non-IE bugs as a matter of pride, we don’t get paid to do it.

also, we didn’t do the flash, so we take no responsibility for it🙂 We didn’t even want the flash, and if you ask me the flash is stupid.
