World Jump Day

Today is World Jump Day. About 2 hours ago, 600,248,012 people in the Western Hemisphere supposedly jumped up at the same time, expecting this to shift the orbit of the earth and thereby solve all sorts of issues like global warming. I can guarantee you two things:

  1. Not everyone who pledged to jump, did.
  2. Even if they had, it wouldn’t have worked.

If you think it would have worked, I can’t help you. If you suspected all along that it was rubbish but aren’t sure exactly why, try The Straight Dope, or Bad Astronomy. Let me be very clear: it does not work, because while the planet does move away from you as you jump up, it moves back towards you as you land! Net result = zero! Have these people never heard of Newton’s Third Law?

  1. Newton’s third law? That was “never piss into the wind”, wasn’t it?

  2. No, that was Newton’s Version of Kepler’s Third Law. Newton’s Third Law was “Stupid is as Stupid Does.”
