Increased penalties for shaken baby syndrome
Governor of New York George Pataki has signed into law the bill that has come to be known as ‘Cynthia’s Law’, after Cynthia Gibbs, a victim of Shaken Baby Syndrome. The bill ensures greater penalties for parents or caregivers who kill children by violently shaking them, more clearly defines the crime, and provides for education as to the damage that can be done when shaking a baby.
Why would I be blogging about this? Because Shaken Baby Syndrome – the collection of symptoms characteristic of rapid shaking or cranial impact in infants – is yet another issue that the anti-vaccination liars blame on vaccinations. How anyone can try to claim that symptoms that include swelling of the brain, bleeding on the brain, retinal bleeding (all three from rapid acceleration and deceleration), external bruising of the head (the baby is often also slammed into things), bruising or fractures in the chest area (the adult usually holds the baby tight around the upper body while shaking it), and often a history of abuse, can somehow be caused by vaccinations just astounds me. How exactly is the MMR vaccine meant to break a baby’s ribs? How does it cause external bruising on the head? Almost all of the reports they use to support their arguments focus exclusively on the brain injuries and ignore the supporting evidence, like confession by the parent that they shook their baby, or a history of child abuse.
The support of Alan Yurko by the anti-vaccination liars is an illustrative example. The man was a career criminal, and the post mortem xray of the baby showed various fractures of the ribs with a variety of healing ages showed a pattern of abuse over time. The official defense was that the baby had been sick and crying continuously after receiving the standard vaccination schedule, and Yurko had then noticed that the baby had stopped breathing and he had tried to revive it. The supporters of Yurko fail to acknowledge the fact that one of the biggest factors that lead to parents shaking their babies is excessive crying. Suffice to say the judge saw right through them and sentenced Yurko to jail time.
While in jail he was used as a martyr by the anti-vaccination liars, and as a warning to parents who vaccinate their children. Strangely, they seemed to lose interest in him after he was released and then shortly after was back in jail on charges of burglary, aggravated theft and drug possession. Not a nice guy.
