Continuing where I left off at Blogspot.

About Me

I’m a 20-something female South African trained as an astrophysicist but working in the IT industry. I’m waiting to be granted the power to explode people’s heads at a distance. Once I get it, certain people had better watch out.

About the Midweek Cuckoos

Some time around the middle of a week, in the weeks when I have the time to do the research, I will introduce you to a crazy person. I find them all over – in the news, on the intarweb, in real life. These people are not just quietly crazy, they’re spectacularly, humorously, or dangerously crazy. They are the Midweek Cuckoos. For those who’ve seen Village of the Damned, it was based on a novel by John Wyndham called The Midwich Cuckoos. You know that deep down scary feeling you get that something is horribly wrong with those children? That’s the feeling these people give me. Plus, they’re cuckoo. And it’s the middle of the week. I’m going to stop explaining now.

This used to be a more regular occurance, but the more responsibility I’m given at work, the less time I have to do the research required. Midweek Cuckoos will appear sporadically until further notice.

  2. wow. High praise from a member of the Treatment Action Campaign! I would have to say the same to you: good work. Well done. And keep on fighting the good fight!

    Hi there moonflake
I have now discovered the answer to the question –
    are you m or f?
so you are f – but an assertive type one at that.

well – this was all part of the process of discovering how to post you the following article – which is actually a spoof from the onion – about creationist anti-evolutionists wanting to ‘ban’ evolution –
    http://www.theonion.com/content/node/55807
I just thought it was a very humourous read – and might be appreciated by yourself and others on this blog.
    Lilo
(also an assertive f type – who has been known to confuse people as to my gender on m/boards)
i haven’t thought of blowing people’s heads up from a remote distance tho –
doing things like going up to officials and slamming large pointy objects into their desks and telling them to stop annoying me with their mean paperwork – yes.

What do you have to say about this man? the GOD LIGHT (and the lesser angel light). it sounds… interesting. If it were really true, wouldn’t it be in all of the newspapers by now?

  7. Great blogs, if your not already a fan check out

    you might enjoy it.
    keep it up🙂

  8. Hi,
I found your blog via your profile on SA skeptics forum. Nice work, keep it up. I will now be a regular reader of this here blog.

  9. I found your blog when I was trying to inoculate a discussion board from nonsense being spread by the actual “biologist Gary Novak”. You forgot his argument that soil doesn’t come from rocks being broken down, it actually fell to earth from space, probably an exploded planet in the asteroid belt (that nobody ever knew existed), and that’s why he had an earthquake which cracked his wood frame house.

Also, global warming is just natural because the oceans are heating due to shifting magma plume hot spots heating them up and also maybe the earth’s core shifted around. (PS — Not one observation has been made of ocean floors ‘heating up’ (no sudden breaks in the upper mantle, I guess). We get about 5,000 times the amount of energy from the Sun than the earth’s interior.) Keep it up!

  10. Hi Moonflake, I’d send an email but blog will do.
You can add me to your crazy people if you like.

  11. Hi Moonflake,

Love your content and angle. I always wanted to start a south african skeptic’s blog, but I can see you are doing a much better job than I would have.
Have you heard of http://www.amatomu.co.za/ ? It’s a blog aggregator for south africa. Maybe you should consider set up an account there so your content is more easily accessible to the SA blog community.

    Cheers

  16. Hi Moonflake, I’ve been getting emails from one of the last 3 survivors of the AZT trials, he survived because he stopped and is here 20 years later while the other 2,500 men died.

You have to be more sceptical
    (:
Here’s an example of the AIDS drug mantra in practice.
    0% survival is not good.
“OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of Thai-Chinese alternative medicines and other modern medicines in AIDS terminal patients. DESIGN: The clinical study of survive rate and other clinical prognosis markers of AIDS patients with Thai-Chinese alternative medicines in comparison with other medicines methods (e.g. AZT, DDI,… etc.). METHODS: Two hundred of AIDS terminal patients (CD4 less than 200 with liver, kidney and lung complex) were chosen to this study. These patients took part in voluntarily for the therapeutic methods either Thai-Chinese alternative medicines or other medicines. Both therapeutic methods were applied to treat these patients for one-year study period, from Jan. 1997 to Dec. 1997. AIDS terminal patients volunteers (100 patients each group) were observed the survive rate, weight lost and other clinical prognosis markers during this period. RESULTS: The survive rate of other modern medicines treatment is 0% that total 100 out of 100 AIDS patients died after the first 3 months study. The survive rate of Thai-Chinese medicines treatment is 90% that only 10 out of 100 AIDS patients died during this period and they continue to live after one-year study period. Seventy out of 90 survive patients showed the improvement of clinical diagnosis markers (body weight gained, appetite, immunity, and CD4 cells increased) and live better life at home now. CONCLUSION: The treatment of Thai-Chinese alternative medicines has better survive rate (90%) than other modern medicines treatment (0%) on AIDS terminal patients after one year period. It also helps the AIDS terminal patients to gain the chance to live the quality life.”
The recent advanced treatment of AIDS terminal cases by using Thai-Chinese alternative medicines in Thailand–the first year study (1997).

  18. Oh and of course he isn’t happy about AZT either.
You can tidy up my double post, I just wanted to show something positive for a change.
    Have fun.

  19. Came across your blog while trying to find out more about this Daniel Kruger fellow. But more aspectys of your blog drew me in and I’m hooked. I remember my days at varsity, it felt like I was the only evolutionsit out there. Got shown all these Kent Hovind videos and how they were suppose to be the videos that proved it all! Entertaining videos they were, but by no means a proof for creationism!

  20. Paul Putter Says:

Moonflake, gotta love your blog. I just want to post a punt for my Facebook Group “Carte Blanche have finally lost the plot completely”. This is in response to the latest Danie Krugel offering, I’m sure we’re on the same page on the issue. Keep up the good work.

  21. Hey, moonflake!
    Your blog is super.
Thank you for providing thought-provoking topics.

  22. You have an excellent blog.

The useful sites are very useful. Especially the Index to Creationist Claims which I have visited and found very useful when dealing with some of the dogmatic creationists.

Your blog appeared today as a top post on wordpress under the topic “Religion” for your 35W bridge collapse blog, and at the same time an article about “Evolution Theory takes another hit” appeared as the top post under the topic “Science”. How screwed-up is that???

    I did have fun though … http://bitsofbrain.wordpress.com/2007/08/09/evolutionary-theory-takes-another-hit/

  23. Yes, it’s great news about the Wikipedia exposures. However, it remains a source of worry, the number of times, online, you find Wiki being quoted as an authority, as if it were a REAL encyclopadia.

  24. Hi moonflake,

I found your website when trying to find out more about this Danie Krugel guy some friends were telling me about. They were convinced it was all true, I was convinced he is a fraud…

anyways, since I found your blog I have been addicted to it! I am also a 20-something female, but am still studying Medical Sciences… I am actually Dutch and just in South Africa for 1 year (my time is nearly up!) for a research project on HIV.

Just wanted to say that your website really is awesome. Not everybody I have met here in South Africa has been on the same line of thinking as I am, but you definitely are🙂 And I don’t feel as if the newspapers here always give an accurate depiction of what is really going on… So I would like to thank you for and congratulate you on a blog well done!

  25. Thanks Liesbeth! And good luck for the rest of your project.

  26. […] This South African blogger is also less than entirely impressed by Mr Krugel. Here’s her post about Krugel’s performance on a South African show, mentioned in glowing terms on the above-linked Canada Free Press article. […]

  27. Mr. Krugel was on John Robbie’s show on 702 this morning with regards to the missing McCann (sp?) girl.

Goiing on about how it’s his opinion that all matter is in “communication”

And then the in the news bulletin thereafter they go and call him a scientist!

  28. Great blog. I found it looking for stuff on Danie Krugel. You are doing a far better job than most of the mainstream ‘professional’ media. Keep up the good work.

i am a Zimbabwean currently resident in Europe. i stumbled across your blog whilst looking up this Danie guy. Fantastic blog.

  30. Enjoying your blog thanks.

Thought of you on the weekend. Was at the Natural and Organic Expo in Cape Town, don’t know if you went? A lot of it was really good, with information about sustainability, permaculture, organic food, growing your own, climate change, genetic engineering in food etc. Unfortunately there was also a lot of fluffy stuff like someone reading auras, psychics, chakra balancing and other varieties of the same. Seems to me that it’s time the ‘natural and organic movement’ if you can call it that, distanced itself from the fluffy stuff. Often when people think of natural or organic they think of a tie dyed hippie reading auras, and it really detracts from what is otherwise an important idea for people to get involved in! You don’t need to be a ‘tree hugger’ to go organic. Anyway just thought I’d share that with you cause it irritated me and I had to share it with someone!

  31. you had me suicidal, suicida. Liesbeth Kiki.

  32. Awesome site – great to see like minded South Africans blogging. Keep it up

  33. You restore my belief in the existence of logical thought still residing in the human race. Thank you for that.
I had always been lead to believe that as one got older (retired sawbones) one got more tolerant, instead I have, until I met up with these blogs (yours and others of a similar nature) got more cynical and despairing.
Continue. keep the little grey cells working. Keep your teeth in good repair and once you have a mouthful, don’t let go! <- only one of those.
